Second Class

(3)

 Unit: Basic Movement Concepts

Title: Exploring hand clapping, up and downs and marching

Introduction

This is the second class with early childhood kids with special needs at Linda Ray. We decided to repeat the same routine and the same songs/dances. At this point it is more important to re-enforce the skills that they have already been introduced to. Carol and I will have three groups and teach 00:30 min. each. The first group is ages 0-1 (infants), second 1-2 (toddlers) and the third 2-3 (toddlers). As we did in the previous lesson, we will explore basic concepts such as "hand clapping, up and downs and marching" using a number of songs, props and games.

A Note to Remember

Physically, dance/movement therapy can include light exercises that improve mobility and muscle coordination, as well as reduce muscle tension. Emotionally, DMT can help improve self-awareness, self-confidence and provide an outlet for children to express and communicate feelings. (1)

Typical development for children aged 0–3 years shows that at this age, children are learning to trust their caregiver, as well as their own ability to exert influence on the world. Children's attachment experiences are thought to be the foundation for their later social, emotional and cognitive development. (2)

Reflections

1. Today we started with the infants. There were 7 of them. I remember Lion, Emily, Daryl and Kiki. It went well. I am glad Carol is leading because I am learning how to handle the babies and how to make the assistants participate. We did a waltz and were able to each grab a baby and dance. The children loved it.

2. Carol is going to bring some noodles (manipulatives) to make some new activity with the toddlers.

3. The second group was larger and more animated than last time. I remember Izaia, Gabie, Kayla, Vantriol? The others I do not remember. Next time I will write their names down. One of them, whose face I remember, but not his name, remember the game from last week. He kept saying "I got it."

4. The last group was only three of them. We had a new toddler, Abra, I am confused about the name of the other two. It was similar to our last meeting in that they were self directed. Lalana? She tends to be self-absorber until she comes back full of energy. Abra was 100% engaged. The child with autism was, for the first time somewhat participating.
